About the association
A registered Latvian association working so that children grow up safe and parents are not left to cope alone.
How we began
The association was founded in 2009 by eleven parents, a school psychologist and two social workers from Krimulda municipality. The immediate trigger was practical: after the 2008 economic crisis, family support services in the parishes of Krimulda, Lēdurga and Ragana were reduced to a single overloaded specialist, and families needing help were being sent to Rīga, 40 kilometres away.
The first activity was a parent support circle in a borrowed room of the Krimulda culture house, with home-baked bread and no budget. Within two years it had grown into a weekly programme with a trained facilitator, a Saturday youth club and a small fund for counselling sessions.
Today the association is registered in the Register of Enterprises of the Republic of Latvia under number 40008183980, keeps an administrative office in Rīga at Kurzemes prospekts 1b, and delivers most of its programmes on the ground in Krimulda municipality. We remain small on purpose: three part-time paid coordinators and roughly sixty active volunteers.
Values
Child welfare first
Where the interests of an adult and a child conflict, we act in the child's best interest, as required by the Protection of the Rights of the Child Law.
Family inclusion
We work with the whole family — mothers, fathers, grandparents, foster and guardian families — and never treat a parent as a case file.
Empathy without judgement
Poverty, addiction, divorce and burnout are conditions to be worked with, not moral verdicts. Nobody is asked to prove they deserve support.
Transparency
Every euro received is recorded, reported annually and open to inspection by members and donors.
Community resilience
We build local capacity — trained volunteers, cooperation with schools, the parish social service and other NGOs — rather than dependence on us.
Governance and leadership
The association operates under the Law on Associations and Foundations (Biedrību un nodibinājumu likums) of the Republic of Latvia and its own Articles of Association, adopted by the members' general meeting.
- The members' general meeting is the highest decision-making body. It convenes at least once a year, approves the annual report and budget, elects the board and may amend the Articles of Association. Every member has one vote.
- The board consists of three members elected for a three-year term. Board members serve on a voluntary basis and receive no remuneration for their board duties. The board represents the association, manages day-to-day operations and is accountable to the general meeting.
- A revision commission of two members, elected separately and independent of the board, examines the annual accounts and reports its findings directly to the general meeting.
- A standing safeguarding officer is appointed by the board and holds independent authority to suspend any activity or volunteer where a child protection concern arises.
